Culture is the algorithm you ship every morning.
Your team runs the code you write with your tone in the Monday standup. Rewrite it with intention.
Engineers understand this intuitively: the code you commit today runs in production tomorrow. What most founders miss is that culture works exactly the same way. Every meeting you lead, every Slack message you fire off at 11pm, every time you praise one behavior and ignore another — you're shipping the algorithm your team will execute for the rest of the week.
Culture is not a poster in the break room.
I keep a short list of the behaviors I want my team to run on: bias toward the customer, data before opinion, direct kindness, and own the outcome. Every week I audit myself against those four. Did I actually reward the person who told me the uncomfortable truth? Did I make a decision from a spreadsheet or from a feeling? Did I close the loop I asked them to close?
If I didn't, I don't get to complain when the team doesn't either. They're running my code.
A rewrite you can do this week.
- Pick one behavior you want more of. Name it in your next standup.
- Publicly credit the first person who demonstrates it. Loud.
- Privately correct the first person who violates it. Kind, but immediate.
- Repeat for 30 days. Watch the team recompile.
You don't change culture with a document. You change it with the tone you carry into the room.
